03 July 20 Wairoa to Mahia Peninsula

The morning started lovely and sunny in Wairoa. We had a look at the town centre with new eyes and made it to the cafe which was recommended to us, finally now it was open.

It’s a little sad that Wairoa has become quite run down. That said, the locals remain super friendly.

There’s a lot of history here from the early moari days to later European settlement. I suspect a lot of that came to an end with the huge earthquake in the 1930s. A lot of rebuilding went on but I guess its never been the same since.

Worth having a look and getting a feel for the history. The river is a spectacular backbone to the town.

Our next stop, Mahia Peninsula; as you saw from the map, just a short drive away. This is the location for Rocket Lab and they had a planned launch on 04 July which we are hoping to catch. The high winds followed us to Mahia but the day cleared up while we spent a relaxing day mostly at our campground and beach. Fortunately the day cleared up towards the end gifting us with some stunning scenery
